The Samsung Odyssey G9 has a very high refresh rate to deliver a smooth and responsive gaming experience. It includes a joystick and four additional buttons to navigate the on-screen menu. However, the coverage of the wider Adobe RGB colorspace might not be enough for professionals in the media and publishing industry. The monitor handles reflections well and its wide viewing angles are great for sharing content, but its sub-par contrast ratio makes blacks look like gray when viewed in the dark. We purchase our own monitors and ICC Profile Download. C49RG9/CRG9. The color temperature is warmer than our 6500k target and the gamma doesn't follow the curve at all, causing most scenes to appear darker than intended. The sRGB mode locks the Contrast, Color, Black Level, and Screen Adjust settings, but not the brightness. The Samsung Odyssey G7 LC32G75T is a much better monitor than the Dell Alienware AW2720HF. The HDR peak brightness is decent. The screen carries the AMD FreeSync Premium Pro certification designed to give some reassurance around VRR performance. Just like the CF791, the CJ791can be VESA mounted in either 100x100 or 200x200 VESA wall mounts using the included adapter. ICC Profile Download. The 27 inch screen provides an immersive gaming experience and plenty of space for productivity, but the 1080p resolution is a bit low for this screen size. The back isn't too gamer-oriented, so it shouldn't look out of place in an office environment. Distracting flicker with low screen brightness. The Samsung CJ791 has a VA panel and slightly better blacks. You can adjust the height and tilt, but you cannot swivel or rotate the screen and this will disappointthose who regularly share their work with a colleague. This wasnt too drastic, but it led to some inconsistencies and the resulting greyscale accuracy measured on the right showed high dE errors at 4.3 average. It also has great peak brightness with the latest firmware update and decent reflection handling. Then once youve finished with it, go back and turn those things on again if you were using them before. Unfortunately, it's still plagued by the same scanline and flicker issues from past Samsung monitors, which are problematic if your PC outputs games in low frame rates. The Samsung has a VA panel, gets a lot brighter, and has a higher refresh rate. Gaming-wise, the Acer has better response times, at max refresh rate and 60Hz. You lose accuracy if you mount the screen above eye level. That had shown a 2.34 gamma average which was too high. When lit, the black level rises significantly and is very distracting, as there's a big difference between the zones that are lit and those that aren't. The BFI features also locks the brightness setting, but if you set the brightness before enabling the BFI, it stays on that brightness. Once active, the backlight is strobed off and on rapidly in sync with the refresh rate you have set, in the example above this is at 240Hz. Update 05/16/2019: The dimming frequency field has been updated to include '>1000 Hz' for monitors with high flicker frequencies. The gamma curve was too high overall with an average 2.34 measured in our testing. The last significant consideration is likely to be around the curve of the screen and thats really going to come down to user taste. Also, it has a much wider 49 inch screen and 5120x1440 resolution, making it a better choice for atmospheric gaming. Adobe RGB Picture Mode: Custom. We had a slight over-clamping of the colour space in some shades resulting in a 96.1% sRGB absolute coverage which was fine, but we are left with some over-coverage still in blue and red shades, leaving a 112.4% relative coverage. The Samsung CJ791 has good reflection handling. TheAcer Nitro XV272U KVbmiiprzx and the MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD are very similar gaming-wise. There are no signs of color bleed on the Samsung Odyssey G9. Another difference is that the Neo G8 uses a different screen coating with much better reflection handling. The LG has better viewing angles, due to the IPS panel, better ergonomics, can get brighter, supports HDR and has a 4k resolution. Also, its contrast ratio is only decent, and it has bad black uniformity, so it isn't the best option for gaming in the dark. With ~0.63ms of that accounted for by the very fast pixel response times, we can estimate a ~5.38ms signal processing lag when adaptive-sync is enabled. The screen actually comes out of the box locked to a 120Hz mode which Samsung list as optimal in the user manual. The Samsung manual for this screen isnt the clearest, and it feels like theres so many caveats about every setting available that it becomes really difficult to figure out what you do and dont want to use. This is a monitor with decent performance for office use. The Samsung Odyssey G9 and the Dell U4919DW have the same size, aspect ratio, and resolution; however, they're intended for different uses. The Extreme (MBR) setting is an additional motion blur reduction, strobing backlight mode which is only available when adaptive-sync is disabled, and also when you have local dimming disabled. Left: Samsung CF791. Due to its wide format, the edges of the screen can look inaccurate if you sit too close; however, the screen's curvature helps mitigate this issue. Even if Samsung advertises Quantum HDR 2000, this isn't a real VESA certification, and it doesn't hit 2000 nits. The FreeSync range over HDMI is <20Hz to 144Hz. Were not sure whether reality bending is a good thing to be honest, and we find the curve to be too drastic on such a small screen size. There are no specific low blue light modes in the OSD menu, but there is an Eye Care setting with options for low and high. Despite its low peak brightness, it doesn't have many issues displaying sRGB colors at most shades, and it's also great with the Adobe RGB color volume. This means that the Samsung has a wider format and is better suited for dark rooms, but its viewing angles are worse. The sRGB clamping in the emulation mode is moderate but has some issues with the colour space matching, and resulting colour accuracy still. Sadly, it's not the best choice for dark room viewing because it has a low contrast ratio that makes blacks look gray. We would prefer it if you could simply enable MBR and it take care of turning relevant unsupported things off for you, then turn those same things back on when you disable MBR. We will talk about the 3 available local dimming modes in a moment, but its possible to create a very pleasing HDR experience on the Neo G8, with low levels of blooming, deep blacks and bright highlights. The same goes for the sRGB emulation mode which lacked a tight clamping of sRGB and had the same issues with accuracy. The Neo G7 is a typical monitor with a smaller 32-inch screen that's the better choice if you find the 43-inch screen of the QN90B too big. C49RG9/CRG9. It has perfect coverage of the sRGB color space used in most web content, and it has good Adobe RGB coverage, but it under-saturates greens and over-saturates reds. The Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 has a great HDR color gamut. The Gigabyte M32U and the Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 S32BG75 are both 4k, 32-inch gaming monitors with a few advantages and disadvantages. The ASUS has an OLED panel with perfect black levels and no blooming around bright objects, while the Samsung has an LED panel that gets brighter in SDR, and some highlights are brighter in HDR too. Theres very little change here in these measurements compared with the default custom mode. We have no idea why Samsung choose to set the mode up like this, but can only assume it wasnt tested by anyone with actual working eyes. The vertical viewing angles are poor. General and Office. Poor horizontal viewing angles as expected for a VA panel monitor. With ClearType enabled (top photo), diagonal lines look thicker and more fleshed out, such as on the R and N. The Alienware AW2720HF has an exceptional response time when playing at maximum refresh rate. In regular content, the contrast is expected to drop with local dimming enabled. We arent really fans of manufacturers inventing their own HDR certifications, especially when its clear that by branding it as HDR 2000, people are going to assume that it is the same kind of certification as other screens they see that actually earned that badge in a different way, and were certified properly. 27GP950-B. There's a 27 inch version that will have worse text clarity due to the lower pixel density. It displays a wide range of colors in HDR and gets bright enough to make small highlights pop, but larger areas don't stand out, and some colors look washed out in HDR. They're both available in 27 and 32 inches, and while they have a few similar features, they're different in a few areas. The ASUS ROG PG348Q has an IPS panel whereas the Samsung has aVA one. However, the Samsung has a bigger 32:9 screen, a better contrast ratio, and a higher refresh rate. It has other gaming features like FreeSync variable refresh rate (VRR) support and G-SYNC compatibility. The stand has wide V-shaped feet that feel cheap, but they support the screen well. You are unlikely to see this in real HDR content, but on even a high zone FALD like this isnt not possible to avoid the points where a zone has to decide if its going to be bright or dark, and so you get some blending between the two as the image varies. They all showed very similar greyscale dE, and the colour temp, RGB balance and white point were all very similar. It has a higher 5120x1440 resolution and 240Hz refresh rate. While the G9 has a super ultrawide screen with a 32:9 aspect ratio, the G7 has a standard 16:9 screen with a higher 4k resolution. The Gigabyte G34WQC and the Samsung Odyssey G9 score similarly overall, but there are many differences between them. The Samsung has a VA panel with a much higher contrast ratio, and it gets a lot brighter in HDR. The backlight is flicker-free at all brightness levels. The Gigabyte is the better choice if you want something for co-op gaming as it has wide viewing angles, while the Samsung performs better in dark rooms as it has improved local dimming and better contrast. The Odyssey G7 has much better ergonomics, better build quality, higher peak brightness, and supports HDR. It has a slow response time resulting in black smearing and a lot of motion blur behind fast-moving objects. They both have a 170Hz refresh rate, exceptional response times, and low input lag. Note that accuracy varies between units. T55. Once again, the response time at 60Hz is bad as the response time is slow. For these measurements we made sure that local dimming, dynamic brightness, the ECO sensor and Eye Care settings were all disabled, so as not to interfere with the measurements. Both situations should be fine for most gaming, but if youre particularly sensitive to lag or playing very competitively then you may want to disable VRR in your gaming.
